Subject: Cover crop in dry climate

Hutchinson Kansas
We usually are pretty dry but have been real lucky this year to have plenty of rain. We have 2 80s that are notill and have significant weed pressure, especially roundup resistant pigweeds. The one will be beans on beans next year, other will be milo on milo. Aside from row cultivating the milo this year they haven't been tilled in 5+ years and dad isn't want to give up on notill even though we have the resistance issues and low grain prices.

My question is can I plant a cover crop of rye this winter to help prevent pigweeds next year or am I going to regret it due to moisture loss? I probably would want to kill the rye a week or two before planting just to be sure everything is dead before planting next spring?

Probably not gonna be able to sell dad on it either way, more or less just thinking out loud.
