Madison Co. Virginia | CIDR's are good for a 14 day protocol. If you're doing a typical 6-7 day protocol, they can be reused. In a closed herd like mine, I don't bother to wash them. I just hose them off, let them dry, and store them till the next use. As far as storage, remember they're activated by moisture. If you got them 100% dry, they could be put in a tight container, but it's much safer to just keep them in a cardboard box or paper bag.
Also, CIDR's frequently cause a small amount of junk in the vagina(puss?). Any time I breed right after a CIDR, I use a protective sheath so I don't carry any vaginal contents into the cervix.
I've had a lot of trouble remembering which CIDR's are on the first or second use. I'll try the knot idea.
Edit to add: I've never heard that refrigeration was necessary on new or used CIDR's.
