Agent Orange: Friendly fire that keeps on burning.

Get a Panamax. Mid-priced somewhere around $70.

Some years ago I sold computers and accessories to folks in the area. A lot of my customers were rural and way out at the end of the REA lines. If you ever had any experience with a bunch of kids holding hands while the first in line touched the electric fence, you understand that the last in line got the worst shock. Same with lightning on the power line. Guy at the end gets it the worst. Had customers hit with lightning and while the Panamax might get fried, the equipment plugged into it always survived. Panamax might be fried but the lifetime warranty replaced it for free.

About the worst case I remember was an incident where a 35 Kilovolt line fell across a 14 Kilovolt line and charged that line with the higher voltage that traveled into the homes. The surge ruined refrigerators, and all sorts of other appliances that were plugged in. It cooked several Panamaxes but did not hurt equipment they were protecting.
