A good bolt gun in .223 will do 300 yards and the ammo is cheaper than anything else available. That being said, a lot of other calibers like 22-250 or 25-06 are better performers but also more expensive to shoot unless you reload.
As said, you will need a good scope that will cost close to the cost of the rifle as well.
