They focused on paying off debt, not taking vacations and all the other convenience and comfort things that we seem to "need."
Think of what you could pay off if you didn't have cable television, air conditioning, newer vehicles, vacations, cell phones, etc.
No state, federal income tax, fica tax, sales tax, and 1000 of fees either. Health insurance too. Think about how fast you could pay off debt if that money stayed in your pocket.
