We ran something through our MoCo and twisted the drive spline end of the impeller drum. I took it to a local machine shop and they cut the shaft out and made a new one. They did a nice job. Re-splined it, tapped it, etc. Now, I think I need to have it spin balanced. Have any of you done this? The machine shop did not have a shaft bed big enough to do this. I have heard differing opinions on this. A John Deere engineer told me that I probably won't need to have it balanced since I didn't damage the drum which was already balanced from the factory. I just twisted the drive spline. I appreciate insights.

Get a hold of Gary at G&P Balancing near Janesville, IA and I'm sure he'd be able to balance that for you. Call ahead to tell him what you've got and he might give you a time to come so he can do it while you wait. I think it's a good idea to have it balanced because it's out and there is a chance that it's bent.

That was my thought too. After calling around to some different power train shops, I was put in contact with Hupp Electric Motors in Cedar Rapids, IA (319)366-0761. They do work all over the Midwest on power plants, ethanol plants, grain facilities, etc. The also do some outside work on Ag equipment. They recommended testing it in the actual machine. The lady in charge sent a technician out this morning. He got there at 7:30, put a bunch of magnetic sensors on the bearing mounts, plugged them into a $45,000 computer, and we tested the shaft in the cutter. It tested good = peace of mind. He was gone by 8:45. He is emailing me the data from the test. I haven't got a bill yet, but with the rough figures she gave me over the phone, I think it will be somewhere in the neighborhood of $200 plus. ($50/hour driving time + $100/hour on site). That would be way cheaper than taking it somewhere and having them test it on a bed. They were great to deal with so far and it was much less of a headache than I was anticipating.
