Subject: Burnt air filters in mx120?

Litchfield MN.
Have an mx120 that suddenly stopped. After it stopped it had smoke coming out of the exhaust. Opened up the air filter housing and the the paper is completely burned out of one side of both air filters. I am thinking a plugged/blocked muffler, or if what I call the flapper can between the muffler and the air filter housing malfunctioned , could that cause this to happen? I have not heard of this happening before, has anyone else?

Haven't had a chance to look at it yet. It's my nephews tractor and I have been gone this weekend. Looking for ideas and wanted to know if this had happened to anyone else.

Yes it happens. Either your muffler is toast or your air cleaner was plugged.

You are correct on the " flapper can " I have seen it happen on MX Magnums.

Its a round metal can that attaches near the aspirator, between the aspirator and the muffler, that has a swinging metal flap inside that acts as a check valve to keep exhaust from being drawn into the air intake.

Take the flapper can off and start the tractor, there should be suction on the pipe where the can came off. If it is blowing back toward your air cleaner, your muffler is rusted out inside and needs replacing, replace it or you could burn the tractor up.

Not to mention the benefits of running the tractor with no inner or outer air filter.( holes burned in both = no filters).
