Subject: John Deere drill closing wheel

I am looking for some different options for closing wheels on a John Deere 750 grain drill. We do mostly no-till and am looking at going with a spiked closing wheel to help get better ground contact and closing action. There are many options out there but trying to see if anyone has a preffernce or luck with one

I haven't tried them yet. We've had muddy conditions planting soybeans the last 2 years. So I'm seriously considering geting them for our IH 1240 planter.

I ran several different breeds side-by-side on my jd1890 drill. The oem wheels tend to do a lot of bouncing. Spiked closing wheels that were heavy like the oem wheels and tend to also bounce like them. Curved wheels tended to dig too deep and move the seed around. The best I found were Thompson wheels from Exacta. They were the lightest built by far BUT they did the best job of running smooth in my dirt. This is in no-till planting in covercrops at 7-8 mph.

Check out www.greendrills.com to see cast closing wheels cut into spiked wheels. We have had excellent results from these wheels. Drill and planter cast wheels can be cut into spiked wheels for $25 each.

Happy with the Thompson in my heavy soils. Seems to do a better job than the oem. Have them on a 1590.

We've run Dawn Curvetines on our 750 before and now 1560 for about 10 years. We really like them.
