Alton, Ia
Do you have Extension Forestry people in your area? I would ask them. I recently moved/removed some blue spruce trees, I was kinda shocked how shallow and few the roots were for them. I would ahve no problem putting them over a 9' deep piping system. We also removed some hackberries and maples, the hackberries roots were incredible, the excavator man was cussing. The tree mover told me some oaks have a taproot that goes way down, that's why tree movers and nurseries don't push oaks.

So, every species of tree may be different and a good forestry person can help you out there.
