Kingdom of Callaway - Fulton, Mo 65251 | My wife and I have not taken the kids on a family vacation in 13 years. Partially because the idea of 8 of us riding in a cooped up van for 12 hours was not my idea of a vacation. I went to a utility auction and bought an old RV that we fixed up, put the correct tractor brand decals on, and then headed out for Gulf Shores Alabama - the REDNECK RIVERA!
We stayed the first night in the RV in Tupelo, Mississippi and then in a rented condo on the beach for 5 days. We really enjoyed it. We all got sunburned, discovered the hard way that my oldest daughter is allergic to shellfish, and got sand in bodily crevices I didn't know existed. I didn't do squat except play with the kids and nap.
We went to the zoo one day and saw a tiger get a bath, alligators, and an interesting use of old grain bins. Another day we went to an amusement park where I whooped everyone in the go cart races and then celebrated my youngest sons 14th birthday at a Mexican restaurant. Before we left, we went to the Flora-bama bar that Kenny Chesney sings about
On the way back home we stopped in Mobile at the battleship Alabama and really enjoyed touring the ship and the submarine. I toured the Battleship Missouri years ago, but it was still an active ship, so this was the first time I got to go inside a turrent. They also had several tanks on display, including a WWII Sherman and a M46 like my uncle drove in Korea. They had several airplanes, including a really impressive A-12. One of the Vietnam era fighter jets had two stars next to the canopy for the two MIGs it shot down. There was a group of Russian tourists there with us and it really made you think. If you ever are through Mobile, make time to stop, it's well worth it.
I enjoyed the drive down and back. I always love seeing how other areas of the country do things differently. We saw rice fields, catfish farms, and it looked like wheat harvest and hay season are in full swing down there. I wonder who on Agtalk we passed by? We also really enjoyed the RV - that is the way to travel. It was really nice with 8 of us to be able to use the toilet while cruising at 75mph down the highway. The kids were able to play games, take a nap, and just move around. We really had a nice first trip in it. We made a lot of memories!
