Goldfish are very cheap, cost nothing to maintain, but you're pretty much putting out a free buffet for herons.

The fish will reduce the amount of algae in the tank, but hardly reduce the mouth droppings from silage-fed cattle. If your goldfish are near a bunk where you feed silage and grain, you'll still need to clean it out periodically, and the fish are just one more hassle to work around.
