Subject: RE: What is grass hay in rounds going for in your area?

Granville County, NC
This is a good question...in my area hay sells "by the bale". I prefer to try to buy by the ton...because I don't have any way to know how much bales really weigh. It seems that you can get hay in this area for $40 to $60 for a 4x5 round. Quite a difference in price. Assuming that a bale this size averages 750 lbs that is around $130 per ton more or less. Another big issue here is that the quality of the hay is always in question. There are guys that never fertilize, bale ditches, etc. and still charge in the same price range...so unless you know the producer you are rolling the dice with regards to quality. I purchase my hay mostly from neighbor who rolls 4x5 rounds. I guess the weight is 750-800. I pay $40 a bale, but I know how he fertilizes, etc. I would prefer to get much larger bales, but they are few and far between in this area of NC. I look forward to everyone's comments.

Tim
