Maybe a savings bond? Takes a while to mature (kinda like a kid) and they'll have something at the end of it. Toys get broken, or the child gets 3 of the same thing. Whatever is purchased with a gift card goes away at some point, and the child never associates the gift with who it came from. A savings bond, matured, with have your name on it and perhaps be touching to the child to think that you thought enough of the parents to be that thoughtful to their child.
Proper gifts for a 1 year old?
