I wonder why I even bother to tell seed sales people my planter works best with 40-50# seed-they always seem to give me bags of 65-72# seed-Now I'm no girlie little wimp farmer-and probably handle more manual weight things on a daily basis then they do spitting out the virtues' of there maximum ear placement stalk quality superior seed.
I wonder if I told them My planter can only plant 74# bag corn they would all of a sudden not have any
I got 12 boxes to fill-make sure you send it in odd numbers-always like 9 or 11-why did I order in 24 or 48 lots?
my vac planter only got so much vac

I love pioneers system. Dump all the s@&! in a bag from small rounds to huge rounds and call it medium rounds. Great and simple to set a planter by.

About 15 yrs ago I got dekalb seed. Seed was so big it came in 2 46# bags because they couldn't fit it in one bag. That was biggest seed I had ever seen. Had a John Deere finger planter at the time any it was the best stand of corn. I didn't think it would go thru the meter, but worked out good

If your planter struggles to plant that sized seed and you told them when you ordered it, reject it. You will be suprised what they can come up with when they have to.

When you bought this corn did you negotiate price? I used to sell seed and the easiest way to come down on price was to use the odds and ends that were hard to sell.

I wasn't a girly man, either, until last fall when I blew out a disc in my back. Of course, the first pallet of seed that shows up this spring is 67#/bag. I might just have to go to all boxes and stop playing around with 8 bags of this and 16 bags of that.

I ran my first box through my seed tender this year, and I agree it sure makes life easier. As a seed dealer, I can only say that you order what your want, but you get what they have. A corn cob only makes so many small rounds, and on a good production year, a lot of the seed is larger than we want.

The planter I have now has no insecticide boxes on it. I never used them for insecticide anyway but sure do miss them to rest those heavy seed bags on while filling the seed box. At least you can put 160,000 seeds per box and only stop to refill half as often on the 35 lb. ones !

I cut some plywood to fit over the area, where insecticide boxes use to be mounted(JD 7200), and just used two rear carriage bolts and serrated flange nuts to hold on plywood = nice flat surface to set stuff or bags.

 I used carriage bolts, so the smooth rounded head, on top of plywood, wouldn't cut any bags, if I set them there. { A big 1/4" machine screw (with screwdriver slot) would have worked, also}

I always order variety first, then ask for rounds.  He has always gotten the variety and quantity I asked for.  If he can't get rounds or if size is higher or lower than norm, he calls and tells me what he has seen coming and going across his screen and asks if that's ok.  He treats me well, I treat him well.  Seems simple enough.

I have been involved with the seed business all my life and if a guy doesn't like seed size they will say no, get me what I want or some other dealer will. Works every time, if you have a good dealer.

The higher ups in the company keep telling us that there newer planters can plant anything. Ha ha. They need to spend some time out here in the real world.

Our 29# Pioneer was the lightest we've planted in many, many years. Had no idea they shipped us something that puny until I thought a 50-unit Pro Box was under-filled. Not happy, but a little wiser. We'll see whether it comes up. After more than 30 years, I'm about ready to dump Pioneer.

We did dump Pioneer this year (2016) . We ordered all of our 2016 corn and soybean seed from Pioneer last fall, 60 % non-GMO corn. This spring Pioneer dealer advised that they received a total of 4 bags of non-GMO corn seed from mother Pioneer, but they would substitute our non-GMO order with GMO for same price as non-GMO. That was a non-acceptable offer to us, we want non-GMO corn. So, we canceled entire Pioneer seed order, including all corn and soybean seed and found a (non-Pioneer) source that delivered all of the non-GMO corn seed we wanted. Now, if the weather permits it will go in the ground next week.

We also have more than 30 year history of Pioneer corn, but that history ended this year, after becoming wiser.

Pioneer has been on our "watch-out" list for several years, since they started delivering more GMO replacements for the non_GMO corn seed we ordered. This year it finally reached 100% replacement. That's not the dealers fault, they can only do so much. This year we learned that other seed suppliers can, and will, deliver 100% non-GMO corn seed when that's what we ordered. Problem solved !

I might hang in a little longer if their corn outyielded the competition even 10 bpa. But it doesn't. That and the have very weak service here. Just a "here" thing, I am sure...

Its not just a "here" thing. My son does some custom combining in the local area. He uses grain cart scales and combine acres for computing yield. From that custom combing operation, he has learned that brand y 105 and 108 day non-GMO corn consistently out-yields Pioneer 105 and 108 day GMO and non-GMO corn for several farms this area. That 10 bushel yield difference is in favor of brand y corn, 'here'.

This is the 4th year with no P on my farms, and at one time I was nearly 100 % P. I got tired of 15' tall hybrids with the ear 6' or more off the ground, and corn that wouldn't take stress and yield with the competition.

The 95% of my corn seed comes from one company. I ordered MR only. Got all MR except two varieties. Company called and said here is the sizes we have, what do YOU want US to do? We communicated and both parties are happy.

Yea I got 3/4 pallet of 61.5# seed too this year! wife is not helping fill the planter this year understandably. Then you have to fill more often because less seeds fit in a box, just piles up on a person. Seems like such a little thing, but in the heat of battle......

Few years ago I got 35# bags, they were only 40,000. Said they don't want to put over 70# in a bag.

That was a slow year!

Then one year I got 42# full bags, could fill the planter and plant all day with those, boxes never got empty.

Something must have changed in seed production to accumulate so many hybrids with heavy bags weights. I would imagine it has something to do with profitability (intended sarcasm). I can recall some time back that most companies would prefer that you plant their graded seed in a medium flat as that produced the best germ results and consequently they charged more for it. Large rounds were decidedly the worst germinating seed and were often discounted. Ironically, most of the 65+ pound bags I got this year, I would have certainly labeled large round. Just as ironic was no discount. So we get to pay more and bust a gut too. Go figure, lol

Isn't it also ironic how the same industry that thought we shouldn't have soybeans in 60# bags deem it ok to have corn in 70# bags. Oh well!

when i was younger, i worked for a seed dealer. Back then it was all bags. So I really did not like seeing pallets of 65-70 lb seed come in. You would take what you needed off the pallet, but sometimes you had to load them on a truck, deliver them, and unload by hand. made for a long day when you handled 500 =/- bags a day.

I think it is that 55# and up won't go in a pro box and 40# and under You cannt see in a probox so all corn between 40-55# goes in a pro box and the rest goes in a bag.

That is the truth! Though 40# will go in a pro box but just not "fill" it. I don't use pro boxes for corn because I am a small farmer. I have told some of the dealers that I don't want anything over 55#/unit when I order. They all listen when I say that, but half of them bring 65 pounders when they deliver it. That is going to stop next year as I will write on the order that I will not accept any bags over 55 lbs.. After all, I am the customer and the customer is always right.

Heavy bags of seed is why I put all my insecticide boxes back on......gives me something to set the bag on.

I'd put them in the back of the barn a few years back when I started planting all GMO's.

Try planting 33lbs seed... That sucks!

My forklift doesn't care what it weights so I prefer the 60lbs stuff. It plants great. That small crap just doesnt plant as well.
