South East SD | So.... signed up for CSP today and will be drilling cover crops in after wheat for a enhancement on a few fields. I am interested in others ideas of mixes and species that would work given my goals, stipulations, and nogo list. We are in SE SD and have a 3 way corn, soybean, wheat rotation and have been no-till/striptill for 25+ years. New to the cover crop thought process and interested in others thoughts.
Goals (in order)
Build organic matter/soil biological health
alleviate compaction
Fix N
alleviate saline areas by water use and percolation
Scavenge nutrients
possible grazing??? not a major concern though
Stipulations (in order)
Must winter kill!!! (part of one of the other enhancements for CSP)
keep costs down under $20/ac for seed
want 4 -9 species for diversity reasons
easiest germinate possible after wheat
nothing that will keep hard seed and show up in subsequent wheat crops
NO-GO List
Buckwheat - unless it will not goto seed before a freeze and dies off
hairy vetch- scared of hard seed in subsequent wheat crops
cereal rye- scared of hard seed and will not freeze kill in SD
Let me know your thoughts
