| You're a victim of the limits of cable-supplied internet.
As was previously observed, the kids get home after school and start downloading their iTunes, gaming, streaming YouTube, etc it WILL choke your internet. Cable ISPs SHARE the bandwidth along the length of your cable serving you back to the router. The more subscribers, the more you will choke.
DSL - digital subscriber line - from telephone company are a direct, dedicated line serving you, only you and no one else, back to the router. If your DSL line is advertised at 30mb/s, that's what you will get 24/7 (unless you have teenie-boppers of your own who also live for streaming, screaming music videos!)
In your instance, unless Mediacom can guaran-goll-darn-tee you 50mb/s, drop them and go to a teleco. The cable ISP's do not have a way to moderate the traffic to serve up their advertised promises.
Wireless is an alternative, however, the speed technology for them does not meet DSL speeds.
DSL does have a distance limitation - typically they can not reach beyond 5 to 7 miles from their switching offices.
