SE IL and SW IN | If I have Hairy Vetch as a dominant part of a mix, then I see little merit in adding N. Vetch is lazy and if N is available, it will not produce if for itself. However since the N made by the vetch is stored in its vegetation and not shared with the rye, some N might help the system find its sweet spot. Any N we would add to this system would usually be in the form of DAP if we need P and applied 1-2 weeks before planting and termination of the cover.
In this way we can boost the cover crop grass, provide adequate N for the corn seedling, but not give the vetch time to get lazy. | |
