We sold 20 surplus, fresh 2 year olds last october, as demand was great at the time, and the dairyman that wanted them had cash, and we assumed cash would get tight as time went on and demand would get lower. We tend to run a little older herd, because we can always market surplus young animals. It takes a bit more management, but long term, we feel this has been best management for the checkbook. The scc should be slightly lower if we culled older animals and kept the younger animals. It's amazing to see the low cell counts that larger herds produce today with the help of sand bedding. |
