If your internet is connected to the WAN port (or internet, etc; the port is usually slightly separated from the rest), then you are good. The router is blocking any access initiated from the outside. Only traffic that is a response to something you did is allowed past the router. The firewall on your computer (Windows has one built in if it is turned on) is the second layer of protection. Between those two protections, that's all most ever do. However, if you have already been compromised (email virus, bad web page are the two main ways), then a computer left on means that the bad program has more time to do whatever nasty thing it is designed to do. When you turned off the computer, the light going out means there is no longer an internal connection on that port on the router. |
