Missouri

MF1100 - 2/11/2016 19:56 What other bulls are good? Open to others; Select sires is one of the easier to get semen for me. ?That is why I was looking there.

Muridale Buster 2nd can be found at Cattle Visions and has something like a 20 ced and a top 1% bw epd. Ridiculously easy calving heifer bull from the north.

Kaper 4508 is proven calving ease from a breeder who knows how to put together reliable genetics. Easy fleshing, good marbling, sound calves that turn grass into pounds. I'd have to dig for it, but he's had calves do well in feed tests in the past few years. He's normally got a bull or two for sale and has sent them all over the country if you'd rather have a walking sire.

Saskvalley Task Force is another proven calving ease specialist. Heavy marbling and has had several calves on test. He can be had through Luke Bowman of Bowman Superior Genetics. I believe he still works for Select Sires too. He could tell you a lot about Gauge as well.

RS DV 034 329 08 is easy calving and from a program where the cows work on fescue for a living. I've had good solid sound calves from pretty common angus cows out of him. He's available at Cattle Visions as well.

Gold Mine 2109 is a very proven bull who is easy calving and comes with some healthy growth. He'll most likely out perform any of the bulls above, but I don't know how he translates to grass beef. He's available from ORIgen/ABS and has been used on several black commercial herds with good results and they continue to use him today. The calves come out like snakes and just keep growing.

I have a heifer or two almost ready to calve to DMH Cherry Fillet. He's a very old school, easy calving, moderate, easy fleshing pedigree. Something like a top 3% bw epd. There's no real proof yet, but there's no reason to believe his calves wouldn't finish out on grass as he's a throw back to the type of genetics that fleshed very well.  I believe Dennis Hoffrogge in Wisconsin should have semen on him. He should have a couple other moderate old school calving ease bulls who's calves would thrive in a grass based program as well.

There's plenty of options out there, you just have to dig for them or find a shorthorn breeder in the right circle. The breed in general has done a very poor job of advertising the real world cattle and calving ease side of the breed for the better part of a decade now.
