NE Iowa | I started trying summer annuals a couple years ago in one field next to my pasture. Two years ago I planted Piper Sudangrass and was impressed with the growth. Last year I tried a couple different varieties of sorghum-sudan hoping for more yield. I was a little disappointed in their performance. I don't think there was any more yield than the sudangrass. This year I'm planning on a blend of both. Don't skimp on seed. A lot of the seed rate recs are written for more dry areas. I like at least 40# per acre drilled. Also wait until at least June 1st to plant because it doesn't like cool soils. | |
