| How common is it? How big of a concern is this? What causes it?
Seems like I got a fair amount of cows that have them, some are much worse than others. I've noticed this throughout the years, and for the most part it hasn't really seemed to impact anything. I always forget to look when helping others to see if they have it.
Some would say acidosis, but everything in reading saying that causes horizontal cracks. These are vertical.
I asked the vet about sand cracks, said no such thing around here and it was laminitis or digestive disturbance. Little does she know that my cows spend their summers on blow sand, though.
In my research on the interweb, seems to be sand cracks and drying of the outer part of the hooves which eventually heals but leaves a scare, almost like dry fingernails on us. How can a person prevent it? | |
