Carroll, OH | Peas and Radish are a great mix that can keep your costs down, especially planted with precision disc, and winter kill for little concern for spring management.
More diverse mix can provide greater returns and challenges. In central Ohio we like to use a combination of warm season and cool season legume, cereal grains and forage grasses along with some radish and rapeseed. Warm season varieties will grow quickly in the late summer to choke out weeds and the cool season varieties grow underneath until frost and then take off, usually surviving into the spring.
For first timers it is easiest to start with single species or simple mixes and yearly introduce yourself to new species and look at the response on your farm with your management style. Having someone in the area where you can see what they are doing and what results they have is extremely helpful as well. | |
