Subject: RE: Saving back seed (wheat)

Colby, Kansas
I guess I wouldn't go so far as to say its not a recommended practice. Is that Montana State's view?. Producers can do as good of a job as a certified seed producer IF they are willing to put the effort into it. Raise good quality wheat free of cross contamination, keep in in condition, have it cleaned properly (preferably over a gravity table), add treatment if needed, it can be just as good as a certified lot. But, short the crop on N, let it get warm in the bin, don't clean it, etc.,, then probably isn't going to be a real good proposition

And there are differences in terminology also, to me growing up bin-run seed meant that it came out of your bin but was cleaned before seeding. I've had to learn that to some people bin-run is literally that.

Its all about the individual farmer and what they are capable of and willing to do. Most around here keep some back for seed, I would guess the average seed age (years out of certification) on a farm (completely my guess) is around 4-5 years. But there are a small number who buy all new every year and also a small number who are still planting a variety that hasn't been readily available for a decade or more.
