Subject: RE: Saving back seed (wheat)

Central Missouri
It actually takes the breeder some 8 profenies to make and purify a new selection. Some of those may or may not be done on both sides of the equator which potentially reduces the time from 8 years to 4. That 8 progenies gets it to foundation so the earliest it gets to grpwers is year 5, most of them are year 7. Most licensees don't have a registered class any more. The certification process assures that farmers receive pure seed of a variety free of certain weeds and pests. After that it comes down to seed quality. Can a farmer save his own seed and produce a quality seed as good as a certified seed grower? That all depends upon the certified seed growers production practices and quality of cleaning. There is a pretty big difference in nutrient density and quality of seed based on grower practices. jmo
