I am guilty of name dropping. Here is a link to a story about a karate master whom I had the honor of serving with and calling my friend:

He was a very disciplined individual, probably the most disciplined individual I have ever known. He had talent and ability (that is such a understatement) , was kind and witty, with a quick smile. I knew Don Bohan also mentioned in that story, another great man and karate master. A Google search for "William Hayes karate" will bring up many links, some videos.

Thanks for reminding me of those times. I did email Bill a few years ago and received a nice reply telling a lot about his journey. He was still helping lead the Marines' karate program at that time IIRC..

So yes the discipline is a very important part of any learning. It makes for great leaders, great servants and great students.
