nc ks | looking at a 89 Freightliner with I believe a 855 in it (when did the N-14's start?). Anyhow it smokes a little on start-up but clears quickly and runs strong and is only supposed to have 200,000 on it. How ever, it only holds 30PSI oil pressure at 1700 rpm when hot. Is the motor shot or do these motors run a little lower on oil pressure. Edited by kb ag 8/3/2008 01:09

there is a chance that one of the piston coolers is broke off I have a 365 hp in a 1989 Pete oil went from 30 at an idle to 12 or 15 they are on the right side 7/16 wrench cap screw head they are cheap like$5.00 the broken part is still in the oil pan

just a tish NE of central ND | Cant be much help on the oil pressure, but if it is bearings that need replacing, they are cheap and pretty easy to put in once you get the pan off.

northwest, ohio vanwert county | can't remember when but some cummins engines had oil pump that was like a low pressure high volume of some sorts. also put a known good gauge on the engine block to backup what you are seeing in the cab. good luck

Bardstown,KY | If it is a N14 it could be a STC and it uses the engine oil at the injectors , mine always smokes some gray or maybe white smoke on startup and also sounds out if time till the oil pressure picks up. As far as the oil pressure goes I think you have plenty or 3 of our trucks all have problems.

My N14 is running numbers like that. It idles at about 10... This is an electric gauge I believe and I haven't verified it. No noises and it pulls strong so I don't get too excited about it. My older NTC did run more pressure though. It always held a steady 38 psi at rated speed when it was warm. Idle was around 15... I would say that yours is NOT an N14 based on age... but if it was it will have a brain box on the left side of the engine to the rear, not that it really makes any difference. Pressure should be the same for both. Rod

NE Mo | May be best to look at those piston coolers first. There are two 1/4" studs on the right side of the engine that hold the nylon nozzle in the block. The nozzles go through the oil galley, pick up oil from there and then extend into the crankcase with a short bend on the end pointing toward the piston, to shoot oil under the piston to cool it. There are two "O" rings around the nozzle to seal on each side of the oil galley. There could be more than one of these broken off to lower the oil pressure as much as you are seeing. The old broken piece may be laying in the pan, but should not hurt anything there. If you pull the pan you may find them there. They shouldn't hurt anything there if left there.

I'll have to have a look at mine someday. The pan is leaking anyway so it's got to come off. I'm not even sure if the gauge is accurate in this binder since it's electric... I just know it runs fine. Rod

NC KS | I think the M11s only run 30 psi hot so you are not out of line.

Alberta, Canada | Yes, that is what my M11 and L10 Freightshakers run at.

Eastern Washington | 30 psi is Ok for the low pressure high volume system Big Cams, Older small cams had high pressure lower volume systems. They should idle at 40+.
