Subject: Valor vs Spartan

Farmer, Ohio
Non GMO beans. Been running 3 oz Valor XLT and 1 oz Valor Sx. Pretty happy with the results. Some Chem dealers are pushing Authority XL at a 4 OZ rate. Both would get spiked with Metribuzin and 2-4D. Comparing the two, the classic is the same. So my question is are these rates equal and which is better? The 1.76 oz of Valor or the 3.3 oz of Spartan? The problem weeds are Marestail and common Rags.

Thanks

I think you are splitting hairs personally. I would switch to authority first to get some activity on the Mairsetail.

I was kicking around a similar switch of a Boundary to a Dual and Authority premix. Learned that Spartan and valor are the same mode of action group. Ultimately decided to stick with my more normal Envive plus metribuzin seemed to be stronger on ragweeds. You should be fine on marestale if you are using atleast 4-6 oz of metribuzin. For non-gmo beans I like to go to 8. Makes some chem dealers cringe but have not seen any bad affects on beans yet.

Also, when comparing these products in the Weed Guide, learned any ragweed control you are getting is coming from the classic. Valor is pretty good as far as a residual on marestale.

Also check out Authority MTZ at the 14 oz, rate. Marestail and rag are my two biggest weeds also. Only spike with .66 oz of LV6.
Seems safer on the beans. That is only an observation.

If MT and Common Rag are your problem weeds, why is Authority MTZ your product of choice?

When trying to make a decision, reading the label of the single product will help clear up a lot of confusion, more times than not. My guess after reading the labels for listed weeds of Blanket and Valor, you will be able to decide which one mixed with Classic will provide the best control of the weeds that are a thorn in your side.

Blanket is straight Spartan.

I have read the labels. What would be your personal opinion of the chems in the original post, targeting the weeds in original post. Or is there a better option ? thanks

To me they are equal in performance. I tend to go with Authority products over Valor mainly for getting it out of the sprayer. Have used both and like both. Would look hard at Fierce XLT for what you are wanting to accomplish.

In nongmo beans we run a double pre, Verdict or Sharpen with Prowl early coming back with an Authority product with Metribuzen the week before May and try to plant that first week of May. Then hit with Prefix at 21 days. Only way we can handle 100% resistant waterhemp.

First let me say am not a Valor fan, in this part of ILL. But when it comes to MT and Common Ragweed. Valor XL is the hands down winner Vs Authority XL. That is why it is best to look @ individual labels in a chemical mix product. Pretty much a waste of money using Authority XL for MT and common ragweed as the Classic is the only thing labeled in the Authority XL mix to control these two weeds.

Weedman is right about Firece XLT . Would be the premium product for controlling Mt and common Ragweed as the Zidua in the mix brings some more weed killing punch for MT and Common Ragweed to the table in the three way chemical mix.

Zidua label

IMO a farmer needs to study the labels as to what his chem person is peddling, to make sure it is the best option for the weeds @ hand vs what is best for the chem peddlers bottom line.

Fierce XLT, how will it control Giant Rags as well?

Seems in RR beans with Sonic/Authority First used pre, I have 1 farm I have GRW and Canadian Thissle that come through. RUp takes care of em, but would be nice to try and control them ahead.

That farm is going to corn this year, I have considered planning on 2 years of corn for 16/17 and using a heavier rate of Atrazine this year. Grandpa used to do that on new farms back on n his day. He had burr cucumber on a couple new ones and eradicated it on those farms with a 4 year corn program....

Only way effective to get rid Giant Rag, is with post spraying year after year. Save your money on heavy rate of Atrazine and spend it on the post side on something that will kill it like Impact + Atrazine..

What about in beans? Is this where is should just be using Flexstar on RR beans anyway now?

This year I had intended on adding Flexstar, but with the rains, it got too late for Flexstar. I just went ahead and used Round up. Gly killed everything, but not before some of the thistles got to seed.

Thanks Coup

First Rate post is hard to beat for GRW in soybeans. If you want to go a cheaper route 3 pint of Extreme, spiked with 1 pint of 4 lbs Glyphosate is another option. Extreme is a good product for those that don't have TWH issues.

Looking to control marestail and ragweed also. Would this be a good burndown program?

3-4 oz Valor XLT
6 oz metribuzin
1 pint 2-4d
1 qt powermax

Would I need COC or NIS? I'd assume the Fierce XLT would be quite a bit more $ than Valor XLT?
