I was thinking about broadcasting zinc in the form of zinc sulfate in addition to urea, sulfur and pre. We don't have fertilizer on the planter so this would be a way to apply it. The coop said it would cost about $6 acre more. Is this worth our efforts?

It depends on your soil tests and the rate of zinc sulfate, but yes, it can be a good method.

I've got soil tests >1% and I'll add in 10-15 lbs of zinc sulfate with the MAP. I'll probably repeat the application in two years. If I wanted to "fix" the zinc for several years to come I might go 20-25 lbs of zinc sulfate at one shot, but that's not my preferred option. (as much because of pocket book as anything, but also because I'd rather spread it out).

What does 36% zinc cost? Hopefully it came down with all of the other commodities.

Would the blend of micronutrients be the way to go? Seems like a good idea but is it cost prohibitive?

IMO better to have a blend of specific nutrients needed. For example MESZ is a nice blend to start out with. But in my case I want more S and Z then Phos on most farms. Why not just blend MAP/AMS/ZnSo4? Get exactly what u want and let your soil test or budget determine how much of each.
I personally like the idea of zinc sulfate over the zinc oxide in MESZ and I prefer Ammonium Sulfate over their blend of Sulfur and Sulfate in the MESZ.

Just a personal preference.

I will say tho that depending on the coop or fert supplier, micros can get expensive. So price check and negotiate. Usually they will work with you if u are willing to take it in the amounts or containers they get it in. Many micros come in 50# bags or 2000# bags. Ask em what u can do to be easier on them and it should work out for everyone
