Anyone know what they are paying for organic corn? I got a farm that we were thinking trying it if the price is still reasonable, I know it will be a lot of work but it's worth a try.

My friend who farms roughly 800 acres organically. For corn usually gets between 1.5-2x the conventional price. Most of his corn goes to New York state to a large organic chicken farm.

What kind of yields do organic producers get compared to non organic?

I am pretty close to county average. I sure that I am losing some yield potential by planting 2-3 weeks late to avoid GMO pollination issues. Weed control is a challenge, but corn is a lot easier to work with than soybeans. Maximizing profit in the non corn years is the challenge.

70% of what conventional production would likely be.

do truckers ever accidentally fill the organic loads out of the conventional non-organic bins? Seems like a mistake that would be pretty common, how would the buyer ever know?

Every load needs to be identified with a specific lot number that links it back to the field of origin. By the time I look up the lot number, I will see which bin that crop is stored in. Much conventional non-GMO corn still has enough background crossing due to pollen drift to flag a GMO test at a food grade buyer.

As for "accidentally" filling from the wrong bin, this is why the certification inspectors audit sales every year. I need to be able to provide receipts for all grain sales. I am sure that a determined cheat could get something slipped by. My inspector noted last year that he would be going over sales records with a very fine toothed comb if yields from conventional fields were under the yields for my organic ones, as that would likely be caused by selling conventional crop as organic.

The prices of corn and beans have really dropped in the past 2 weeks as it has gotten cheaper to import because of the strong dollar. Last I heard it was $9 for corn and $20 for beans.

Not appearing to be the right timing for my plans of transitioning. Hard telling what it will be 3 yrs from now.

Depends how you do it, guys around here will plant organic beans, rotary hoe 3 or 4 times and let them go. Does the field look bad? yes. Will weeds get worse and worse? yes. But they will just rotate the field out of organic for a few years to build it back up with fertilizer and do it again. Rumor in the coffee shop is a guy planted 400 acres of organic beans and cleared $100k profit using the rotary hoe method in 2014. Its not sustainable though.

Where are these organic acres you talk about? I thought I knew Madison County

Fields that are organic around these parts generally stay in organic production and don't rotate back and forth as you suggest

I don't know of any large merchandisers in Iowa, but I know Organic Valley buys in quite a few areas to ship directly to their dairy producers. One of the big challenges with maximizing returns in organic production is finding the best price, because there is quite a bit of spread between buyers. Often it is worth going quite a few extra miles to get the top prices.

Gotta get through the two transition years though. If a guy is going to grow alfalfa for conventional livestock, this could really work well. Load up on fertility in the first alfalfa year, harvest alfalfa for two years without doing anything to transition, then organic corn, organic soybeans, organic wheat, then go back to alfalfa for a few years. Use manure during the organic years for fertility.

To compare from first hand experience the margin is 3x in organic as conventional at a minimum

On 82 hybrids just south of Quebec organic corn returned $450 in profit an acre. Prices are better in the east

I would suggest contacting the OFARM cooperative contact for your state. They are a great resource for connecting producers with market opportunities.

Clarkson Grain Company in Central IL, Grain Millers INC, and SunOpta are options for food grade grains. Organic Valley Co-op buys quite a bit for their livestock producers throughout the country.
