So do we want to totally eliminate ALL corn bores and root worms?

I'm not anti GMO, heck all my crops are GMO, but by eliminating 100% of most "pests" , are we now playing with fire? Maybe some birds or other predators are dependent on eating corn borers......

Yeah, it doesn't seem like a great idea. It's one thing to express a novel protein in a domestic organism that does not reproduce in the wild. It's quite another thing to try to engineer a wild population.

This is why GMO sorghum is a bad idea.

Here's round one from my Grad student.  Question was, your thoughts?   Varied. In a short rundown:

-The concept makes me nervous. Any self propagating biological construct is inherently nearly impossible to control once in the wild. Something like this is what the anti-GMO folks consider

their worst nightmare.

-The CRISPR/Cas9 system is really, really new, and doesn't have a long solid history of behavior. And it's incredibly powerful in that you can VERY specifically target engineered changes in pretty

much any organism. And yet many scientists are rushing ahead in using it without deep thought towards the consequences.

-I really doubt that the bank of human knowledge has nearly enough knowledge and understanding for us to go making intentional, specific changes in our biosphere. Hell, look at how many

negative impacts we've caused just in our history of accidental screw ups.

Bottom line, cool technology, but the very epitome of the phrase "The road to hell is paved with good intentions".

His plant work is with GM products. He expects to defend this fall.

If ECB and corn rootworm aren't native anyway, what's the problem? It's the unintended circumstances we need to watch out for.

I think that northern, western and southern corn rootworm are all native to North America.

Is "Corn" native to North America?

True, I guess I figured it was more central America than north America but its all connected.

Corn rootworms were present in North America feeding on other host plants before the arrival of corn.

one of the advantages of CRWs being native to North America is that there are lots of things that eat CRWs in NA yet little effort has been made to exploit biocontrol of CRWs in NA.

In contrast, European entomologists collect organisms in NA for screening as CRW biocontrol products to be applied in Europe and have developed some effective products.

Successful application of entomopathogenic nematodes for the biological control of western corn rootworm larvae in Europe – a mini review

According to this article, fluid stream application of nematodes into the seed slot ahead of closing wheels is as effective as insecticides.

So we get things like Asian Lady Beetles and the tree huggers can rejoice but those of us living with the bastards aren't so thrilled.

I know, don't you wish you could fly over that country back then and see it all?

What did they do when a herd of bison decided to have a corn snack?

Anybody that has read my posts knows I've been a proponent of the benefits of the traited products we have. However, I'm not so sure about this one.

It's like eliminating misquitoes to control malaria--it solves one bad problem but fully doing it is also bad.

Whether you like it or not this is the biggest discovery in molecular biology in our lifetime. Cancer gene elimination, genetic disorders in infants on and on. Life on earth will never be the same IMHO because of Crispr-Cas9. God be with us.
