On the big bins you guys are talking about - they are all commercial - meaning they are all gauged for the application. all have raftered 15k or 30k roof to keep bin in round with the sidedraw. Even on farm bins, you either can buy a heavier gauged non stiffened bin or a lighter gauge stiffened bin. Dont get caught up in the weight of a bin- I'd pay 10% more for a lighter stiffened bin. especially in bins larger than 36' dia. A stiffened bin is alot less suseptable to wind damage on the sidewall. Those fat sidewalls are like billboards when empty and have a tendency to buckle second ring down in big winds. not saying a stiffened wont, but stiffeners give them some vertical rigidity
