Subject: RE: South Dakota hay storage question

I was able to travel up to rapid city, SD over Thanksgiving and was able to see a lot of country. One thing I couldn't figure out is all the hay stored in middle of field in stacks. The alfalfa fields is what I really noticed. Around here we don't want to drive on fields and kill out a big spot from where bales were sitting. It wasn't just one place almost every alfalfa field I seen was like this. Anyone got a reason?
Thanks

Only reason I can come up with is that it's easy lol. I generally row up the bales along the end of the field and bring them home in the fall or winter. I can't say I kill off a very big area of alfalfa only the narrow strip the bales sit on, and I will probably set next years on the same spot so very little damage to the alfalfa. Which route did you take to get to Rapid City, wondering if you went by my place.
