southern MN | Good discussion, sure is hard to figure out which one of you is more right... Depending on ones soil!
I have high ph (6.5-8.2), high OM (3-9), K tests not too bad in raw numbers but the % is either side of 2%. Which is how these types of soils are.
A small 3 acre field I have was part dads hog yard which happens to be sort of peat, part ditch digging clayish spoil (several feet on top of the sort of peat 'subsoil' now) from the 1950s, and part regular for here dirt.
It sure is interesting to watch a crop grow on that patch!
The old hog yard is the only place on my farm K tests at 4%. Usually raises really nice corn, but there are years, you just wonder what is going on..... Probably the peat showing its colors depending on the year.
The most consistent 1/3 is the ditch spoil yellow clay, I think dad manured it back when I was a kid pretty well and got it working, and deeper roots tap into that peat under it.
The worst ground is the 'normal for here' dirt. I've probably not fertilized that portion well over the years, being 1/3 of a field that tests pretty high in raw numbers....
I'm late to the party on working with soils, so I really shouldn't comment I don't know anything.
That three acre field I have can sure make a person scratch their head tho!
