NE Iowa | Brian, I don't think you are crazy for what you are doing. My highest yielding fields directly correlate to soil test K levels. We also have an area that was a dirt hog lot 40 years ago and the K levels are super high in that area and it is the best yielding spot we farm. Back in about 2002 we were buying 0-0-60 for about $135 per ton. I wish I would have spread about 1 ton/acre back then but when corn was $1.90 it was tough to spend much on "extra" fertilizer. I've been slowly working on my K levels. They used to be 2% and now they are up to 3%. I'm looking to get to 4% also. I've been spreading 250# per acre of 0-0-60 every year for a while now. A few more years should get me there. | |
