If you are looking at Iowa soil maps the numbers in front of the letter are the soil type. The letter in the middle is the slope. C is 5-9% slope and D is 9-14% slope for example. The number after the letter is amount of erosion. So if your 5-9% is say 163C soil type and your 9-14% is 163D3 that would explain the big drop in CSR. The 9-14% has a "3" so is "severly eroded" and it would likely not raise as good of crops. But if it was comparing 163C to 163D then there would likely be no difference in yields because they are both "minimal erosion" soils.
