Western Iowa | If you enjoy it, I say do it. Life is too short......
I and the wife started with one small bred heifer dad gave my wife about 5-6 years ago. We now have 35 breed cows and 5 replacements to be breed next summer. Most of the herd is heifers we kept back out of our own. We also kept some out of a group of feeders I purchased for backgrounding.
Frankly it didn't work at first financially, but we enjoyed it and built up as we could afford it. No bank money, and I would advise you to do the same. You have a guy that will help it would seem like. Offer to buy his herd over 3 years at a fair price. You should be able to come up with enough for 3 head upfront and calf sales will make the 'payment' to him easy enough.
If you have a decent job you can pay for a little equipment and several head of cows a year, it just needs to be a priority.
Financially it is making sense for me now. I am not sure how many we will end up with, and grass availability may play into it, but I intend to grow until I don't feel like it! LOL | |
