1996 was a decent year, first year that had a better way to control the lift pump over the problematic 1995 and older setup that piggybacked off the OPS.

The PMD, the black box on the side of the IP, will die an early death if overheated. If you keep plenty of fuel flowing through the IP (keep the LP system healthy) the PMd will last a long time.

The main killer of 6.5Ls is heat, a good radiator cleaning and a fresh AC Delco t-stat will keep them happy.

Overall, I can tell you more if you would like, but for the immediate question, no, its not junk, just requires a little Preventive Maintenance, and they are quite reliable and get good MPG. I would snatch it up.

Sounds like you know them well. How I can tell if it is build -96? It has taken some time to get it other side of the world and complicated licensing done down here. Could easily be -95... What if it is -95... Is that gonna be big issue.
