If you have another computer or you daughters boyfriend has one that can burn a CD I'd download the Puppy Linux ISO and burn it to a CD. Then use that CD to boot. If the computer shuts down while running Puppy Linux it's a hardware problem, if it doesn't, it's a software problem. Everybody should have a Puppy Linux CD for just such occasions. The version that is easy to use and should work for everybody is http://ftp.nluug.nl/ftp/pub/os/Linux/distr/puppylinux/puppy-5.5/slacko-5.5-PAE.iso If you don't have burning software download and install IMG Burn (free) http://www.softpedia.com/dyn-postdownload.php/5d142c7f95bcff9032a6349756d0b991/56001495/6ca2/4/2?tsf=0
EDIT: you don't have to set it up, the first screen is for setting it up but if you're just testing and want to see if the computer will keep running you needn't go beyond that screen. When you exit Puppy don't save anything when it asks. Or just push the computer power button for 10 seconds to shut down.
