Some time ago, a salesman more or less explained that AC is for really fast data on newer, bleeding edge equipment but not so compatable yet with most things and end up running in N mode anyhow, while N is for longer distances on nearly everything.

He kinda suggested an N with a good high number (that it can handle high data rates too) would match what I was doing over a flashy, expensive AC router.

Or put another way, at that time spending money on a good N router was wiser than on a middle of the road AC router.
