Subject: RE: Pioneer 3394 compared to modern corn

SE MN Still in Pothole Country
We were on the northern end of adaptability for 3780. In about 1977 3709 was a big gun here for a few years. Earlier but did not dry down as well as 3780. Then 3732 in about 1981. Ruled the roost until 3737 came out. Candy for corn borers but the year it came out 3737 had super yield year. We had a 5 bottom 20 inch IH plow and you could plow all week behind 3737 and never plug up. No chopping head or stalk chopper needed. 3751 came out in maybe 1988 and was a better stalk than 3737 but related to it on one side. Until 1992 3751 was OK but something was always better. Then we had two cold years in 1992 and 1993 followed by an early but not hot year of 1994. 3751 was absolutely the best hybrid in SE Minnesota for three years running. There is an old saying that if something works every year you just haven't done it long enough. 1995 the corn borers visited the candy store. That and better competitor genetics was the end of Pioneer dominance here.
