The roots of a large corn plant feed from the whole soil profile. Not just the strip.

This is why I'm not a huge fan of strip applied fertilizer. Maybe a small amount to help the younger plant could be convinced it could help???? But like plowboy said, the roots on a corn plant especially grow very deep and wide both. Fertility IMO needs to mimic this.
