NE Indiana-Fort Wayne and NE China
Ear position is independent of health of the plant my friend. This is an inherited trait which a growing number of producers are liking less all the time. Diplodia is a bigger problem in rainy areas with these varieties. I remember when there were no varieties existing that had an erect ear trait. THis has been developed by plant breeders and for some varieties has help improve harvestability. Frankly I would not select an erect ear trait in most of the eastern northern cornbelt region if I could help it. A crop with ears that drop will give you an opportunity to see how uniformly the crop emerged months ago. When you can watch them all drop at the same rate you know how well the seedbed and planter related to each other.
