Subject: RE: I think everyone expected a new plateau

In many businesses it's very important to take advantage of the good times in preparation for leaner times. It's pretty typical in the construction industry (you make a lot per hour, but how many hours is the question). There is probably a core of JD and other workers who get this and took the overtime realizing that they would have no shortage of family time in the near future. Having a better financial situation probably enhances that family time. Recognizing seasons and pulling together as a family in fat and lean times is part of life (and not a bad part).

In farming it's supposed to the the same way - use high prices to retire debt, make needed (probably long overdue) upgrades and set yourself up to go through leaner times in better shape (especially as we get older). Buying things is great if you have the cash left over, but don't expect that cash to always be around. I've heard too many times how we 'deserve' as good of a living as an in town guy. Those guys should get in town jobs and get out of running a business because it will always require too much sacrifice. Running your own business whether it be a dentists office, candy store, sewer cleaner or even farmer means we make sacrifices of time, money, hobbies at times to reap a larger reward. Sacrifices come with risk because there isn't always a guarantee it will payoff as expected. I think God's point in all this is to bring us through things.

On family time, running a business (or taking advantage of OT when is available in ag related businesses) often means we are not always available to be helicopter parents (society's version of good parenting - maybe not so much). On the other hand it does teach seasons of life and means time spent is real time instead of just another amusement park. Of course if the OT is just to satisfy selfish desires that usually results in lots of toys being for sale cheap.
