I didn't' think Air Force One ever flew without escort planes, at least when the president was aboard. We have seen up to four escort planes accompanying a big jet a couple of times in the past. Always suspected it was the president or vice president


Actually, 9/11/01 was the first time the Presidential aircraft ever had a fighter escort while flying in US airspace.  Much more likely that you saw fighters with a tanker.

Edit to add, just judging from your map dot you aren't far from a standard refueling track, and you could also easily be in the path of a tanker dragging fighters from the East Coast to a Red Flag at Nellis, or something of that nature.
