Kingston,Mi
As a Lion I thank you for your glasses donation. Lions put old glasses to use in developing countries around the world providing vision improvement to people who would otherwise just do without. A member of our club was headed to the Ivory Coast on a church medical mission, he was able to take quite a few pair of old glasses that had been checked over and the correction noted on the lens. He had found (or someone had found) a simple device that allows volunteers and native people to be trained to determine the amount of correction needed so that the correct glasses can be fitted. This device cost our club $300 several years ago. Paul took it to Africa and used it on the church medical mission with the instructions that it remain in the clinic once someone was trained in its use.

Most if not all Lions Districts also accept hearing aids, which are cleaned and reprogramed for use in developing countries. Our service projects that raise monies from the communities we serve in is used to provide glasses and occasionally hearing aids to our citizens. Our county health dept. has an arrangement with our local Walmart to sell a limited selection of frames and lens (not bi or tri focal) at a set price and to bill eye exams at a set price. I am the treasurer of our small club and write the checks, using the Health dept. to verify financial need and having them help with the frame selection process means that for those who qualify for assistance, we can buy a pair of glasses and the eye exam for $125.
