I had to install one in our dairy barn when our water bacteria count went sky high (water is tested every 3 years). They definitely work and really no maintenance. The bulb is good for about a year. Our UV light has a beeper that alerts us when it is time to change the bulb.

I bought it from Grainger for about $600, but it is cheaper through Amazon or Ebay. They make different sizes. I went with the 5 gallon per minute with 3/4" fittings: http://www.grainger.com/product/AQUA-PURE-UV-Water-Sterilizer-5PT39...

I fixed the well and our bacteria count went back to zero. But the UV light worked great when we needed it.
