See the picture of checking bins in this article. Would you ever fill a bin this full? They've never heard of leaving some room at the top of the bin?

That's how Dad likes to fill our bins. Pile it as high as you can without it running out the manhole or roof vents. I will say though, we never have any issues with grain quality.

I fill the bins that full every year if there is something to fill it with.
We just have to open the two doors up when the fan is on so it does not blow out the vents until it settles or shrink some from drying , as we air dry

There's a local guy who sets his auger up and doesn't bother even looking until there is corn on the ground. No joke everyone of his bins you will see a pile.

You must live close to me. LOL. I always think I can get the rest of the load in & end up running it out the back side. Not as easy to climb bins in my older age.

Behlen actually made inserts to put in the roof doors so you could fill them fuller. But that would interfere with running the fan as the doors are your vents also. I always fill my bins to the top if I need the room. Then core them in Jan.

Fill 'em up. I been filling them to the eves for years, no problems. FYI, never fails they overflow on the backside of the bin, never the side your filling from.

Every one of them. I didn't build them to leave a ring down. Just about always core them by December so what does it hurt?

Have had ours that full many a time.

Edit: If needed, the corn referenced in the OP's picture goes through a dryer before going into the bins.

Ok I guess I'm the odd man out. We leave room to get in bins every year. And leave them level if possible. They keep better level and we check bins every month or so over winter and every week when spring rolls around. Typically that will mean down 1/2 a ring on the outside and maybe just little higher in the middle. Stirator bins have to stay down a ring unless you pile on top with dry corn which we sometimes do. I can't believe how many just fill them up, no wonder you have corn go out of condition. Full to the door so you can't get in and pile that you can't take the peak off is sure to go out of condition come spring.

I've always been told to leave room at the top for airation. But I'm air drying too. Try to core in Dec as well. I guess if it's been through a dryer I would fill fuller.

If anything you should leave the center dipped down, that's where the fines are and will have reduced air flow. How many bushels have I had go out of condition? Since you have seen all my grain tickets please tell.

Easy Roger, all I know is when we leave bins peaked come spring they start to go out of condition. Over winter we take some off the peak with shovel so they don't or are less likely to do so. If bin is so full you can't get in you can't do that.

We don't have spreaders in few small 18' bins. Soybeans seem to handle a peak better, and even if they start to go you take peak off and problem is gone. Something about corn it just doesn't always work that way.

Our new bin we have left almost perfectly level and down 1/2 ring. Has worked great this way. Even with fines in the middle, we get enough to air it cools and has not been a problem.

I can understand that. Just my opinion, but a bin of any size should always be cored by the end of the year. In 32 years of filling bins the only discount for damage I have received was for because of that very reason. Far away bins that I didn't want to core..............until July. Wasn't to bad but I will always core bins now. Also 90% of mine is coming out of the dryer, all I have to do is cool it which sometimes can be an issue at the top of big bins. Will generally move some loads around after harvest between bins just to make sure. Just saying you probably shouldn't associate everyone who peaks bins to having bad corn.

Sorry Ty, but I have to disagree. I have been doing this too long for it to be a fluke. The rare occasion I have corn start going bad (maybe once every 10 years), it is due to an issue of getting a batch of corn in from the dryer which was a little too wet. It is hard to catch it if I am out in the field harvesting, and I usually make a note to move that corn sooner.

We have filled the bins completely full for more than 35 years.....hot from the dryer at about 16.5-17% and cooled in the bin.  Dad even has the eaves sealed so the corn can go up the roof a couple feet, and I strap the door shut with tie straps. I have never leveled the peak out. I just run the fans for an extended period after drying, and then again in the winter on the coldest days ( preferably below zero 0*) to freeze the grain. I then never touch it again, and have cold corn coming out in late July, not counting winter sales where I will core the bins. But I do not core them specifically to keep the grain in condition. Only to reward prices, or fill contracts.

Now.....to add a disclaimer.....this is in regards to corn out of a dryer. Putting corn in directly from the field and air drying is something completely different in my opinion.

I fill them full to running over too. You can get 5k bu more in a 42 ft bin. X 6 bins equals 30k more storage.

Fill them full, and I usually end up picking some off the ground every year.  By filling them full, that eliminates having to check them because there is no way to get in them. No issues in decades, knock on wood.

I fill them that full when transferring from a dryer. I have some bins that are low temp dried and I want to be able to scoop them fairly level, so I need space to scoop and get in . +1 on the corn running out on the back side not the side with the auger.

2014 yes. 2015 is looking like a no at this time.

I try to leave enough room to get in there. Bins with stirators *never* get above the bar.
