This is the neighbours field beside mine, he has about 2000 acres like this, it's full of dandilions, foxtail, thistle, wildoats, kochia and about everything else known to mankind, the municipality won't do anything about it it's so frustrating to have all this spreading to the neighbours.

Sounds like he's working crop insurance and agristability and getting ready to quit farming.

As for weeds we got some "holistic" farming neighbors. "No use spraying out perfectly good cattle feed."

Don't you have any local or state noxious weed laws that could be used to force the owner to clean up his mess?

Hello Orfarmer
If those weeds are adjacent to his property, poster has every reason to complain. I've been through that before, here. Too many non farmers buy farm land & then let it go into weeds.

Yes, but since 99 out of 100 people are non farmers I really don't think most people care if somebody lets their field go to weeds or whether or not their grass is mowed every week. The other 99 probabaly think of it as habitat. There will probably be hunters out there this fall who value that as a hunting property. Different people have different interests. Trust me, the guy with the weed field might not be all that happy about his so called proud neighbor.

Hello Davpal
If a person decides to live in Canada, & in MB, you are expected to follow the laws. If you choose to not follow the laws, then you have to be prepared to face the consequences. Here in MB we have a law called "The Noxious Weed Act"

If there is no significant weed seed spreading problem, I wouldn't worry. Even better if he throws some grass seed out there and gets a good stand in a few years. More land needs to go into grass, not the other way around.

I can see both sides of the argument. I've got a neighbor with a few thistles that are just waiting to come over to my place. I sprayed mine a few months ago, guess I won't have any to spray next year if they actually took care of theirs.

Have you talked to your "neighbor "? Asked him if he had a plan for taking care of the weeds? OR is it just easier to get on a social "Facebook" and call someone out?

Hello Proudfamilyfarm
If you're from MB, call your local Weed District office. All of those weeds are on the Noxious Weed list here in MB. District weed supervisor will come out & inspect. If land owner is found to be negligent, they will order him to clean up his mess. If he doesn't comply by the time given to him, RM will do it for him & tack the cost of spraying or mowing onto his property tax bill. Don't pay your tax bill & property goes up for tax sale.

While true, tax enforcement is a difficult and time consuming process. Administrators I know hate the process.

Hello Primer
We all have to do things that we dislike, now & then. But, if it's their job that they are getting paid to do, then they should be doing it.

Yes, but it can take several years to finish and can be stopped by the landowner pretty easily wasting the administrators time.

Hello Primer
No doubt. But I would imagine that in most cases, just the threat of loosing one's land would cause someone to take some corrective action. Whether it be to spray or mow the weeds themselves, or pay the bill after the municipality took care of it for them & added it to their property tax bill. I mean, the cost of removing the weeds would seem like small potatoes compared to the value of the land.

Looks like an opportunity for a young farmer to talk to him about farming it for him. Either for cash rent or custom farm it. Also, could be an opportunity for someone to fence it off and graze the weeds off of it, if the owner was open to it.
Lots of opportunity there, just have to figure out the best way to approach it!
