Subject: Bean Yields???

Southeast Iowa
I did some pod counting today and came up with about a 50 pod average.

So if I planted 160,000 we will assume 145000 grew, For each bean that grew I get 150 harvested

If you calculate that out(145,000 plants x 150 beans) 3000 seeds per pound. It comes up to a 125 bu yield.

Why doesn't this work out that way to compute bean yields?

Where do all the beans disappear to?

Gary

Southwestern Indiana
You probably have about 100k plants left per acre and each pod doesn't average 3 beans.

50 pods usually equals 50+ bushels. That's about as accurate as any estimate.

I'll hold you to that 1 pod per bu? Never heard that you can estimate beans all you want I had beautiful beans last year and they didn't do great. So that is the case this year I counted 95 pods per plant in 30 inch rows so I'm going to get 95 bushel !!! I go by 2500-2800 lbs if I calculate it out it comes out at 88 by per acre it's population x average pods \seeds per lb /60 that's what I come up with don't know if it works might get you all excited for nothing !

My advice is don't waste your time lol.

Even the pro farmer tour doesn't try and estimate bean yields... They just try to correlate a pod count to previous years.

As bad as corn is to try and estimate beans are all but impossible!

Can't be estimated they're either above average or below average or average.

Good advice there is no way to accurately guess beans. After black layer I can get pretty close on corn.

I do the same as IAGary except I divide the 125 you got in half and that number makes more sense. How close will it be. Not sure but let us no when u harvest.

Iowa
Yep. Do the math and cut it in half and you'll be close. Biggest variable at that point is seed size.

Why are you "assuming" what you have for a final stand, take an actual count. i bet its significantly less then 145,000. Also what size were the beans that you planted. Rather then counting pods count actual beans, all of these things will help get a more accurate estimate for you
